Mindlessness

You’ve probably heard of mindfulness, but what about mindlessness? As a highly sensitive person I am overly aware - or mindful - of my surroundings. This awareness manifests into overstimulation and a desire to get out of the present. I am here to tell you that both mindlessness and mindfulness have value in your life.

Mindfulness has been a double edge sword. On one hand, it has created a focal point for my mind when my thoughts are spiraling out of control. On the other hand it has created obsession over my surroundings, unable to disengage from how aware I am of it. Finding balance in my mindfulness was difficult for me, this is where mindlessness came in.

Mindlessness occurs when you drink water, eat food, or ride a bike, it just…happens. In flow or flow state is another term that parallels mindlessness. It occurs without effort. You are usually in a mindless state when you are engulfed in a passion of yours that isn’t work. Maybe your passion is playing the guitar, running, or writing. The point is that there is no thought process.

Reflect on which of your passions brings out this mindless state in you. Being fully immersed in your body.  Cooking while listening to music is an activity that seems to kick my mind to the curb. Walking, especially in nature or while listening to music, is probably one of my favorite things to do when life is raining down on you.

If you have something you do that separates your mind from your body leave it in the comments!

With Love,

Luke
